Thiruvananthapuram: CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Thursday said the political fight at the national level could not be narrowcast as one between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Inaugurating the triennial conferences of Kerala unit of CPM in Thrissur, Yechury  said; "what the country requires today is not a choice between two leaders Modi and Rahul Gandhi as being projected by media but a choice between pro-people policy and policies that loot the people."

He said the strength of alternative policies has to be based on the policy direction put forward by the left and democratic forces. “It is not neta but neeti that is required for the country. This policy framework needs to be worked out,” he said.
Mr Yechury said in the current situation, the main task was to defeat the BJP-RSS combine which could be possible only by mounting popular protests based on alternative policies.

“Our draft political resolution says very clearly that this task of defeating RSS-BJP will have to be done without entering into any understanding or electoral alliance with the Congress. But at the time of elections, appropriate electoral tactics will be worked out whereby the maximum pooling of anti-BJP vote will be done to defeat BJP-RSS,” he said. Interestingly, Mr Yechury while speaking about appropriate electoral tactics to maximise the pooling of the anti-BJP votes, did not mention that such tactics should be adopted based on the political line as was stated in the draft resolution.
