Vijayawada: Prakasam barrage wakes up to the young chaps’ joyful sounds as 20 members play the drums in a systematic order at Krishnaveni ghat every morning. This has been garnering the attention of the public and is forcing them to stop to watch. The drummers are an all-boy group of Jains who have named their band ARAHAM.
Jains plan to conduct big rallies for festivals, for which this band is set to play. Usually, many people hire professionals. But, Jains of Vijayawada follow a different tradition. They start practicing in March and continue it throughout the year. As many as 60 — 75 people are a part of this band and participate in all rallies held by Jains, throughout the year.
Men of all ages show a keen interest to join this band. Dixit, a band member said, “This is our tradition and we have been following it for generations. Jains conduct devotional rallies on different occasions throughout the year, which is where ARAHAM will play a crucial part.” Mr Rajesh, another member said, “This month on the 27th or the 28th, our big priest will visit Vijayawada. This band will officially start then, and continue throughout the year. Not only boys, but girls too will have their own band.” Kartik, a passerby said, “It is very interesting as small boys also take part enthusiastically. I have been standing here for half-an-hour and am willing to witness this till it ends.”
