Poor food has Guruvayurappan students launch stir

The students alleged that the faculty did not even bother to take ailing students to hospital.

It was after a group of college students were admitted to a private hospital here caused by food poisoning after having dinner at the hostel mess, that the students spilled out to the college campus in protest on Thursday.

Kozhikode: Students of Guruvayurappan Arts and Science College laid siege to the college principal’s office demanding immediate checking of the college hostel mess that has been reportedly supplying poor quality and unhygienic food to its students. It was after a group of college students were admitted to a private hospital here caused by food poisoning after having dinner at the hostel mess, that the students spilled out to the college campus in protest on Thursday.

Based on the students’ demand, the college faculty Shaju K Nair who declined to take students to the hospital, apologized to them and the teachers. “Inspite of students expressing their uneasiness after eating food at the mess, the faculty was not ready to take them to the hospital and instead he himself gave the students some medicines. It was later after the SFI intervened, we immediately took the students to the hospital”, said Abhinav, the college SFI unit secretary.

A total of 43 students were admitted to a private hospital, in which 6 were admitted in the ward and 3 were kept on observation. No critical cases were reported. “Students have for long demanded that the hostel mess be inspected and have also complained about the poor quality of food supplied here”, he added.

Calicut University chairperson K Suja detailing the condition of the students has filed a request to the university examination control board to postpone the ongoing university exam for these students because of their poor health condition.
