PUDUCHERRY:  Kiran Bedi, India’s first woman IPS officer who joined the BJP a year ago, was on Sunday appointed as the Lt. Governor of Puducherry. She replaces Lt. General (retired) Ajay Kumar Singh, the Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, who was holding additional charge of Puducherry.

Rashtrapati Bhawan announced the appointment of 66-year-old Bedi, who lost the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections to her former comrade Arvind Kejriwal, in a press release on Sunday afternoon.

“The President of India has been pleased to appoint Ms Kiran Bedi, to be the Lt Governor of Puducherry with effect from the date she assumes charges of her office,” the brief statement from the President’s Office said.
