NELLORE:  A team of doctors, led by Ayush commissioner Col V. Ramulu, has been studying the safety, quality and efficacy of the concoctions being prepared by self-proclaimed Ayurveda doctor Bonigi Anandaiah of Krishnapatnam in Nellore district.

The 10-member team includes Ayurveda University principal, in-charge of Regional Ayurveda Research Institute, two Ayush doctors, an official from Drug Control Administration and local Ayush department doctors.

A senior official in the district said they had collected phone numbers of 500 Covid patients who used the preparations of Anandaiah to help take their reactions. The concoctions being examined include a preventive for the general public, three given for Covid positive patients apart from eye drops given to critical patients with oxygen problems.

At the instance of the team, Anandaiah prepared the conctions before them in Nellore and gave details on the ingredients.

He also prepared eyedrops for lab examination as the samples sent to the Ayush lab in Vijayawada earlier were not sent in a mandatory sterilised container. The entire process was video-graphed and documented.

Referring to the samples sent to the Ayush Lab in Hyderabad three days ago, a senior official said the lab reports were positive with respect to safety and quality aspects.

“There is no bearing on the digestive system and there are no heavy metals in the medicines. We are waiting for a microbial report. We can assume that all medicines passed the test if there are no microbes in the medicines,” the official observed.

“If the medicines pass the safety, quality and efficacy tests, we can apply for GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certification which will enable Anandaiah or anyone to produce and supply the same,” the official informed.

He added that they were trying to speed up the study process to obtain licence for production. He said that an eight-member team of experts from Delhi consisting of doctors and researchers picked up from ICMR and Ayush Departments is coming to Nellore on Monday for further study of Anandaiah’s preparations.
