Green number plates for e-vehicles soon
The Union Government's move behind the green registration plate is to encourage the usage of environment-friendly vehicles.
Bengaluru: The Union Ministry for Highways and Road Transport has passed the notification for use of green coloured number plate with white fonts for private electric vehicles and yellow font with green backing for commercial e-vehicles.
Out of 73 lakh vehicles in the city, there are almost 6,000 electric vehicles in the city. The Union Government’s move behind the green registration plate is to encourage the usage of environment-friendly vehicles. The state government had already installed charging stations and with the BMTC getting electric buses, the city is all set to witness an expansion in the number of charging stations.
BMTC will install the charging station to help the buses charge after every 100 km. At present, the transport corporation has got the buses on lease and if the performance is up to the expectation, the BMTC will try to replace the present buses with e-vehicles.
With 73 lakh vehicles on the city’s roads, and the transport sector contributing 42% of air pollution, there is a huge concern in state government to contain the menace.
In order to promote environmentally friendly vehicles, the state government has declared road tax concession while Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) will provide electricity for Rs 4.85/unit as the tariff for charging vehicles.
The state government in the Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy 2017 has stated that it was looking forward to attracting an investment of Rs 31,000 crore and creating employment opportunity to 55,000 people from supply and demand side.
