Government tells varsities to replicate MGU model
The model ensures ample opportunity to fill SC/ST seats in different college departments.
KOCHI: The State Higher Education Department has directed all universities in the state to follow the model successfully implemented for social justice and social inclusion by Mahatma Gandhi University for college admissions.
The model ensures ample opportunity to fill Scheduled Caste/Scehuled Tribe seats in university departments, government, aided and unaided colleges by renotifying the seats if left unfilled in the first notification.
Unfilled SC seats can be moved to ST quota and vice versa and if the seats are not filled, they are moved to the OEC category. However if the seats are still left vacant in the absence of eligible candidates from the OEC category, they will be moved to SEBC category. The seats that further remain unfilled go to the open quota.
"This system in effect means that no eligible student is denied seat even as many seats remain vacant in different categories due to absence of qualified candidates in particular categories. Mahatma Gandhi University had implemented the system successfully after a careful study from 2010 considering the unprecedented rush of candidates to degree and PG courses," said an MG University official.
However, in aided colleges run by managements belonging to backward/minority communities, the unfilled vacancies shall be filled from the rank list of applicants belonging to the same backward/minority communities.
If seats still remain vacant the same is filled in the manner described above from the general category. The college authorities should report such vacancies to the university within the stipulated time.
The Higher Education Department on Thursday despatched letters in this regard to Calicut University, Malayalam University, Kannur University, CUSAT, Kerala University, NUALS, Sanskrit University and Kerala Technological University.
