Hyderabad: Drivers without driving licences jailed

The main objective of the special drive was to educate and ensure the safety of motorists apart from enforcement.

Hyderabad: The XVII Special Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Secunderabad has sentenced those who were caught for the fourth time driving without a licence to simple imprisonment for five days and a fine of Rs 1,000. They were caught during a drive launched by the Hyderabad traffic police.

The main objective of the special drive was to educate and ensure the safety of motorists apart from enforcement. “In cases booked during the special drive against those driving without licence the vehicle will be seized and will be released only after the violator secures a driving licence or learner's licence from the Road Transport Authority. The violator will be chargesheeted and produced in court,” said Dr V. Ravinder, the joint commissioner of police, traffic. 

Violators who drove due to ignorance of law will be sent for counselling at TTI Goshamahal and Begumpet. The drive against those driving without a Driving Licence will continue to ensure safety on road. 

According to a new survey 95 per cent of the four lakh cars in Hyderabad city have complied with Supreme Court orders. The survey said the remaining vehicles were those of wilful violators who took out vehicles at odd hours to escape the traffic police. The minimum fine that will be imposed on those without DLs will be Rs 500 as per the M.V. Act.
