Mangaluru: The first meeting on the proposed State Education Policy will be held on August 2. Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa who was in Mangaluru on Saturday told reporters that the meeting will be chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

After Congress came to power in the state, the government decided to do away with the National Education Policy and bring State Education Policy.

“The special meeting to be chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will be held on August 2. The meeting will be attended by Higher Education Minister Dr Sudhakar and education experts. This will be the first meeting on State Education Policy,” he said.

The state government is unhappy with the former BJP government’s revision of textbooks, and has decided to revoke it completely from the next academic year.

Education Minister said that though the process has started this year it could not be completed as the academic year has already started by the time the government came to power.

“The previous government had made 45 revisions in the syllabus of which 15 have already changed.  There is no political motive behind this. Only those things which are needed for children and their development have been included in the syllabus.” he added.

The Minister said that measures are being taken to fill the vacancies in the department.

“There is a shortage of about 50,000 teachers in the state. Of this, there are 33,000 guest teachers. About 13,500 teachers will be appointed soon. Currently, the matter is pending before the court,” he said.

“Due to transfers, there is a shortage of teachers in a few schools. DDPI and BEOs have been instructed to temporarily appoint additional teachers till the transferred teachers take charge so that the students do not face any problems,” he added.
