Worker electrocuted by electric cable while digging borewell in Chennai
The victim identified as Shakthi Vel was working at a private borewell digging company.
Chennai: In a tragic incident, a worker was electrocuted when he was drilling a borewell at Thousand lights in Chennai on Thursday afternoon. Police sources the crowbar with which he was drilling touched the underground EB cable resulting in his instant death.
The victim identified as Shakthi Vel was working at a private borewell digging company. Shakthivel was taken to a government hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The incident happened at around 1: 30 pm, in an apartment complex on Haddows road in Thousand lights.
Sources said on Thursday morning, the man along with the borewell contract owner, Manikandan and two other workers came to the site. Since the place was very narrow, Manikandan asked Shakthi Vel to dig the ground with crowbar. When he accidentally touched the underground electric cable with the iron tool, he was thrown off from the spot. Police said the contractor immediately rushed him to the Government Royapettah hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
A case has been registered under section 340 (Causing death by negligence ) against the apartment secretary Usha Meera and contractor Manikandan. They were arrested and investigations are underway.
