Hyderabad students best among major cities in cracking math sums
The study conducted by Cuemath, an interactive math learning programme, surveyed 20,000 students across India.
Hyderabad: Students in Hyderabad perform better in everyday calculations as opposed to those from other cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru and Chennai. The study conducted by Cuemath, an interactive math learning programme, surveyed 20,000 students across India and focused on parameters such as fractions, everyday math, geometry and arithmetic among others.
Around 3,500 students were chosen from grades 1 to 8 in Hyderabad. The study reported: “In Hyderabad students have been observed to have good calculation skills as opposed to students from other cities. Their everyday math calculation performance is better rated.”
The study’s results showed a gender divide exists in everyday maths and geometry — 61 per cent girls were found to have better accuracy than boys. Maths teacher Devika Narain said, “Most teachers try to include daily life examples while teaching the curriculum. It is important to apply what you learn in classrooms in daily life situations.”
The study revealed that as grades increase, the accuracy in arithmetic improved. Students in grades 1 to 3 had 57 per cent accuracy in maths which increased among those in grade 4 to 8. “In lower classes, students are taught more generic math problems but every year new concepts are added. That is perhaps why students in senior classes were seen to have better accuracy in arithmetic and other concepts,” Ms Narain said.
