Residents block rail track near North Coimbatore

The protestors wanted officials to drop the idea of clearing encroached houses built on railway land.

Coimbatore: Residents of Kannappan Nagar near Coimbatore North station blocked the railway track on Friday demanding to drop the idea of clearing the encroached houses built on railway land. A group of more than 100 residents sat on the railway track near Kannappan Nagar and staged a protest, while the railway engineer Rathinakamaraj along with police went to Kannappan Nagar on Friday demanding the residents to vacate the railway land immediately.

The protest was on for more than an hour and came to an end after Coimbatore North constituency MLA, P.R.G. Arun Kumar rushed to the spot and pacified the protestors by promising alternative land in nearby area. The Southern Railway Salem division PRO said, despite giving numerous notices “from our side the residents are refusing to vacate the railway land for more than 40 years now.”
