Tamil Nadu: 6-month extension for Arumughasamy commission

With the new extension, the commission's tenure will be till June.

Chennai: TN government on Friday granted six-month extension to the Justice A. Arumughasamy Commission going into the "circumstances and situation" leading to hospitalisation of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and her "unfortunate demise".The extension was granted after the commission, whose three-month tenure ends on Monday, made a request, sources in the TN government said.

The extension was sought since the Arumughasamy Commission said it plans to examine more than 50 people and go through voluminous affidavits received from people. With the new extension, the commission's tenure will be till June. The commission has been mandated to inquire into the "circumstances and situation leading to the hospitalisation of the late Hon'ble Chief Minister on September 22, 2016 and subsequent treatment provided till her unfortunate demise on December 5, 2016." While making the announcement about the commission on August 16, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said the commission was appointed as there were representations from several organisations seeking an inquiry into her death.
