Vijayawada: AP Crime Investigation Department (CID) has detained a Non-Resident Indian (NRI), Yesasvi Bodduluri, who is also a hardcore activist of Telugu Desam Party's NRI wing.

AP police officials detained Yesasvi soon after he arrived at the Shamshabad international airport in Hyderabad on Friday night to visit his ailing mother. Police shifted him to the CID office in Guntur.

According to CID, there is a lookout notice against him.

Police said the NRI has been detained for his social media postings against AP government and Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. TDP leaders condemned the arrest, alleging it is illegal and stifles dissent.

However, CID released Yesasvi after 12 hours of questioning on Saturday. He has been asked to appear in person at the CID office in Tirupati on January 11.

Yesasvi alleged that since past four years, YSR Congress activists have harassed his family and attacked his house five times, damaging property and CCTV cameras. “I never returned to India because my mother was strong. But I had to come now, as her health is not good. Soon after I landed at Hyderabad airport, police detained me," the NRI stated.

TD chief Nara Chandrababu Naidu condemned the arrest for posting something on social media.

TD general secretary Nara Lokesh tweeted: "Shocked to learn about the illegal arrest of NRI Yash Bodduluri at Hyderabad airport yesterday night based on false cases filed against him in Andhra Pradesh. This draconian government wants to stifle voices that question (it) with arrests and detentions. The last days of YSRC are near."
