THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Industries Minister E.P. Jayarajan on Wednesday reiterated that there was no question of stopping mineral sand mining in Alapppad or shutting down KMML and IRE.

Mr. Jayarajan called upon protesters to see reason and wait till the expert committee submitted its report on the impact of mining in the area. The state can make crores through the nature's gift - mineral sand. The problems of local people will be addressed. At a press conference here, Mr. Jayarajan said mineral sand was an asset for the state. The nature has blessed this particular area abundantly with  precious mineral sand. "I always refer to the Gulf countries which are rich in petrol and diesel.  We too can make crores from the natural resources. Can anyone say that mineral sand should not be used," he asked.

He said the government decided to stop sea washing after the delegation of local people raised apprehensions. The decision to stop sea washing had adversely affected KMML and IRE.

Mr, Jayarajan said till the delegation which came to meet him submitted a memorandum, he had no idea about the agitators and their demands. The representatives of the local residents need to discuss these issues in an open manner and without any precondition.

The minister  said it  was not feasible to shut down one of the top public sector companies like KMML. Such a decision would jeopardize the employment of workers besides resulting in major loss to the state.

Mr. Jayarajan said the government was open to discussing all issues with the protesters.
