Namakkal: As the famous cattle shandy at Kaalipatti near Tiruchengode in Namakkal district opened on Wednesday, a high quality species called ‘Kaaram Pasu’ (a bull variety) from Edappadi - the Chief Minister’s constituency-, fetched a fancy price of Rs 2 lakh in the open sale.
Over 1,500 bulls and cows have arrived for the grand sale at the annual shandy organised here as part of the ‘Thai Poosam’ festival, sources told DC. Interestingly, the revival of ‘jallikattu’ (bull-taming) sport during the ‘Pongal’ festival season has upped both the demand and price of bulls in various markets.
Another famous and sturdy cattle species, the ‘Kangeyam bull’ , much sought after in ‘jallikattu’ events, had takers at Rs 75,000 a bull on the first day of the shandy. A pair of ‘Kangeyam bulls’ was sold for Rs 1.50 lakh, while another calf of the same variety was fancied at Rs 75,000, raking good income for the breeders.
Other cattle varieties that have come for sale in the market included ‘Mayilambaadi’ from Bhavani area, ‘Mayilakaalai’, ‘Aalambadi’ and ‘Vadakathi’, some of the cattle breeders participating in the fair said.
