Telangana high court tells Telangana govt to improve school learning
It suggested formation of a committee to formulate concrete proposals
Hyderabad: Expressing serious concern over the continuing decline in learning outcomes of students in government schools, the Telangana High Court has directed the state government to come up with concrete proposals by Friday to improve the situation.
It suggested that the government form a committee comprising senior education officers to formulate the proposals.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and Justice A. Rajasheker Reddy gave this direction while hearing a petition filed by Mr R. Venkat Reddy, national convener of MV Foundation who sought a permanent evaluation committee to monitor and suggest measures to improve learning outcomes.
The bench feared that falling education standards might be linked to pushing privatisation of education. It felt that reimbursing fees may not be a right idea.
Mr N.S. Arjun Kumar, counsel for the petitioner, said even the latest Annual Status of Education Report, ASER 2018, released last week, revealed a further fall in learning outcomes.
Mr Arjun Kumar said the government and private agencies were measuring the level of learning outcomes but steps to improve the situation were lacking.
