CEE: No say in NRI quota admissions
Mavoji said that such seats coming to general candidates will automatically go to management quota which actually is the general quota.
KOCHI: Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE) B. S. Mavoji has said that the authority for conducting admissions to NRI quota in self-financing (SF) colleges is colleges themselves and the CEE does not have any say in it.
“The AICTE has said that the competent authority for admissions to NRI quota shall be the same as for regular. The authority for conducting regular admission to SF colleges is the college management themselves and so for NRI quota also,” he told DC.
“The CEE conducts admission to 50 per cent government quota on the strength of an agreement executed between the managements and the government. Otherwise the admission would be conducted by the managements themselves. So the managements alone can be called the regular authority for admission to SF colleges and the CEE is helpless in intervening to regulate them in this regard,” he said in the light of the impending admissions in the next academic year.
AICTE says in the Approval Process Handbook 2016-17 that in the event of non-availability of students in NRI category, the seats will be given to general candidates as per general merit. However, general fee shall be applicable to these candidates thus admitted against vacant NRI seats.
Mavoji said that such seats coming to general candidates will automatically go to management quota which actually is the general quota. “The 50 percent seats come to the government on account of the agreement. Only if they take a decision to give those NRI seats to government quota that the CEE can make admission to it and make the government fee applicable to it,” said the CEE.
