Chennai: Even though her son was born with no hands and a deformed leg, nothing has stopped M. Pandiammal from thinking her son is special. His father, Mani, however did not feel the same way, allegedly upset by the negative comments of his neighbours after the birth of his son, Azhagu Raja.

Mani abandoned the family barely 10 days later. Since both the husband and wife are daily wage earners, Pandiammal was left completely hopeless with no source of income.

Residing in a small shack in Pudukottai, Pandiammal is barely making it through the day. Azhagu Raja is now six years old and studying in first grade of a
government school, while his sister Azhagu Meena is eight and studying in Class III.

Crying in despair about not even having the money to take a bus, Pandiammal is unable to take her son to a doctor. “When I go to hospital, they give us some card there but I have no idea what to do with it,” she said.

“The student can neither sit properly nor stand, he has to be carried everywhere and he’s too weak to do anything on his own.  They have no access to any basic facilities, it is extremely heart breaking to see the conditions that the family is living in and they have no help from anyone whatsoever.” said Nambi Rajan, general secretary, Tamil Nadu association for the rights of all types of differently abled and their caregivers.
