Mayiladuthurai tense over defiling of Ram portrait
The Confederation of Hindu Organisations quickly called for a trade bandh today.
MAYILADUTHURAI: Most shops and business establishments in Mayiladuthurai in Nagapattinam district remained closed on Friday in response to a ‘trade bandh’ called by a Hindu outfit to protest against an alleged incident of desecration of Lord Ram’s portrait here.
Police said 14 persons of ‘Dravida Viduthalai Iyakkam Antimethane Project Federation’ including its spokesperson Prof Jayaraman were arrested in connection with the incident and remanded to judicial custody.
Police said today’s incident was apparently in retaliation to some miscreants beheading a statue of late rationalist leader Periyar few days ago near Alangudi in Pudukkottai district.
The Confederation of Hindu Organisations quickly called for a trade bandh today, to protest the disrespect shown to portrait of Lord Ram and they also demanded that the culprits be arrested immediately. However, more than 50 per cent of the shops opened later in the afternoon.
