Chennai&Madurai: On the fourth day of investigation, the state CB-CID made some progress and arrested a professor Murugan who was in constant touch with tainted professor Nirmala Devi booked by the police for her attempt to lure students in to a sex scandal promising marks and money. The police who have seized three phones and a personal diary of Nirmala Devi are also on the lookout for another professor associated with Madurai Kamaraj University and a few relatives of Nirmala Devi are also under scanner.
A few local political functionaries and an husband of former women councillor are also on police radar, informed sources said adding that Nirmala Devi had so far remained tight-lipped about who instigated her to lookout for college students only to be pushed into alleged prostitution.
The identity of the girls is protected and this makes the case challenging but the network of Nirmala Devi will be cracked in a couple of days, sources said adding that the police will seek the extension of Nirmala Devi's custody as the arrested professor is not co-operating with the investigations.
Meanwhile, lecturers and students who were in constant touch with Nirmala Devi are under surveillance and to ascertain whether there have been any volunteers involved with the sex for marks trap designed by Nirmala Devi.
It may be noted that the inquiry commission led by former IAS officer R. Santhanam had also completed the first phase of inquiry. The TN governor Banwarilal Purohit, whose name had also been dragged in to the sex scandal for marks, ordered for inquiry commission last week.
MKU teaching and non-teaching staff stage protest against attempts to denigrate varsity
Teaching and non-teaching staff of the Madurai Kamaraj University held a protest rally on Monday at the university to protest against "attempts to denigrate the university by sweeping with the same broom all the employees into the sex scam. The agitators also wanted the university authorities to take stringent action against Nirmala Devi. The professors also urged for investigations on war footing so that the offenders are booked and the university is free from police interrogations and media limelight.
