National Green Tribunal reserves its order on desilting activity

Hyderabad: The National Green Tribunal in Delhi on Tuesday reserved its orders on interim applications seeking stay on desilting activity which has been going on in reservoirs and rivers in Telangana state and Andhra Pradesh by using heavy machinery.
The NGT bench headed by Justice Jawad Rahim was hearing the applications by Readiness for Empowerment through Legitimate Action (RELA) from Telangana and K. Vijaylakshmi from AP seeking stay on use of heavy machinery in desilting which damages the flood banks/river bed and also results in destruction of ecology besides causing air and sound pollution.
Mr Sravan Kumar, counsel appearing for the petitioners submitted that both the governments have been exploiting sand from water bodies in the name of desiltation. He said there were no reservoirs or dams in Medigadda and Annaram in Telangana.
