Pub owners may get up to 20 years imprisonment: NDPS act

The pubs and bars may even face penalty of up to Rs 2 lakh.

As per the NDPS Act, the managements/organisers of pubs/bars can be prosecuted and they may face punishment up to 20 years imprisonment and a penalty of up to Rs 2 lakh.

Hyderabad: The Excise department can take action against erring pubs and restaurants under both the Excise and NDPS Acts for allowing drugs to be sold or used on their premises.

Director of Enforcement Dr Akun Sabharwal said that the department could suspend the licence of such bars and pubs. 

“Subsequently, we can revoke the licence of the bar/pub. The department has identified 16 to 17 bars/pubs in the city that have links with the drugs racket and has suspended the licence of one pub,” he said.
