Govt hints extension of Parliament session by 10 days
As per the schedule, the monsoon session of Parliament has to conclude on July 26.
New Delhi: The ongoing budget session of Parliament could get extended as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday asked its members of Parliament (MP) to be prepared.
Though the government is yet to make any official announcement in this regard, at the BJP parliamentary party meeting, party president and Union home minister Amit Shah, sources said, asked party MPs not to schedule any official meeting after July 26 for atleast another 10 working days as the session could be extended. As per the schedule the monsoon session of Parliament has to conclude on July 26. It could be recalled here that Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week had told the BJP’s parliamentary party that the session can be extended, if required.
After the meeting, Parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi told reporters, “There is a possibility of this. You will be officially conveyed when a decision is taken.”
Though the Opposition parties have conveyed their disapproval of the idea to the government, however, whether to extend the session or not is the government’s prerogative.
During the BJP meeting, the issue of water conservation figured prominently with Jal Shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekh-awat giving a detailed presentation on the matter, MPs were asked to spread awareness about water conservation.
The Parliamentary affa-irs minister said there will be competition at block, district and state level on water conservation and the best performing state will get more fund from the Centre for better utilisation of water.
Mr Shah also briefed MPs about the 150-kilometer padyatra Mr Modi has asked them to undertake to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The BJP MPs were told that the padyatra should included some social cause and locals should be asked to participate.
