Kozhikode: Chaos marred the council proceedings of the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation on Wednesday after the Deputy Mayor denied permission for an adjournment motion by opposition members demanding the resignation of Health Minister K.K. Shylaja based on the recent High Court remarks against her.

Following protests from the opposition and their verbal clashes with the ruling front, Deputy Mayor Meera Darsak who was chairing the council in the absence of Mayor Thottathil Raveendran, declared all agenda items passed and adjourned the meeting.

When the meeting started at 3 pm, the deputy mayor said that the notice given by Nadakkavu councilor P Kishan Chand could not be considered as the matter was under the consideration of the High Court.

The opposition members protested against the decision and stormed the dais. The ruling front members too joined in resulting in verbal clashes between both the fronts. Despite the Deputy Mayor’s requests to go back to their seats, the opposition members stayed there forcing her to declare all 90 items in the agenda passed and adjourning the meeting.

The entire proceedings of the council meeting lasted only for 10 minutes. Following the dispersal of the meeting, both fronts separately held processions in the Corporation office. The agenda items passed without discussion include the proposed annual maintenance cost by KELTRON for the biometric punching system, sanctioning of '5 lakh for the Kallayi revenue land fencing and bylaw for use of Anakkulam Cultural Centre.
