Tiruchy: De-silting canals on at feverish pace in delta

Dredging canals and irrigation tanks, a sum of Rs 12.7 crore was allot-ted for Tiruchy district and works are going on in full swing.

TIRUCHY: The ongoing desilting works under Kudimaramathu scheme across Tiruchy district will be completed by end of this month, according to Tiruchy collector, S. Sivarasu.

Speaking to a team of media persons who were taken to the work spots, he that 88 works are going on at an estimated cost of Rs 12.71 crore; this apart the Government has allocated a special fund of Rs 452.20 lakh for 55 works for a distance of 200.52-km length irrigation canals, which were also going on war footing.

He said the ongoing de-silting works under-way in New Kattalai high level canal, Kodingaal Vadigaal, attupu-thur Vaikkal, Mullipp-aadi Vaikkal, North Ayyan Vaikkaal, Peruvalai Vaikkaal and other field canals in the district.

The PWD’s river conservation wing executive engineer R. Bhasker  said under the special de-silting programme, the government has sanctioned a sum of Rs 6.09 crore for de-silting canals  in the entire Cauveri delta region. Of this, Rs 4.5 crore was allotted for Tiruchy district.

For dredging canals and irrigation tanks, a sum of Rs 12.7 crore was allot-ted for Tiruchy district and works are going on in full swing. The works at a few places were affected as Cauvery water already reached that area.

However, de-silting will be done in all irrigation canals especially in the tail-end areas to enable them receive water, he added.The district administrations in the delta are in a hurry to complete the works as Mettur dam was opened on August 13.
