PM Modi to launch power for all on September 25

According to a document available with this newspaper, the scheme aims at providing electricity to every house in the country.

Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will announce the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (Soubhagya) on September 25.

According to a document available with this newspaper, the scheme aims at providing electricity to every house in the country. 

Union power secretary A.K. Bhalla in a note to state governments said that the Centre was committed to providnig access of electricity to every household in the country.

In 2015, Mr Modi had set a 1,000 day target to electrify over 18,000 villages that did not have power supply. Last year, during his Independence Day speech, he said 10,000 of those houses had been connected to the power grid.

According to the Union power ministry, only seven states including AP have achieved 100 per cent electrification. The otehrs are Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Goa, Punjab and Gujarat.

In Telangana state, 93.09 per cent households have electricity. Across the country 77.38 per cent of households have a power connection.

Union power minister R.K. Singh on Friday said “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to make a major announcement on power sector on September 25... we are excited about it, it will be very important for the people.”
