Chennai: Green' crackers may increase cost
The firecrackers industry welcomed the move to reduce the noise and smoke pollution.
Chennai: Although firecrackers manufacturers in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu were a relieved lot following the Supreme Court's order which imposed controls instead of a blanket ban, the traders concerned that it would dampen the sale of firecrackers as the order came days ahead of Deepavali season.
While pushing for a “green” Deepavali, the apex court in its order on Tuesday imposed major controls on fireworks including reducing the time frame to burst the crackers from 8 pm to 10 pm. It also limited the manufacture and sale of fireworks to only those that conform to permissible smoke and noise levels.
The firecrackers industry welcomed the move to reduce the noise and smoke pollution. “We welcome the move to bring down the pollution and noise levels. But, it will take three to four months to bring out 'green' crackers and It will also increase the cost of fireworks manifold,” an owner of a prominent firecrackers brand said.
“Banning barium nitrate will affect the production of flower pots, sparklers and pencils. At least, it would be permitted until the alternate chemicals suggested by the research labs like CSIR-NEERI and CECRI,” he said.
“We burst fireworks in the morning at the crack of the dawn. But, in the north, they celebrate Deepavali in the evening. The judgment seems to be unaware of the traditions and cultural backgrounds of our festivals.
There cannot be uniform time slot to celebrate Deepavali,” said Mariappan, general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Fireworks and Amorces Manufacturers Association. He also pointed out the banning of barium salt is unacceptable to the industry as no alternative was given.
The traders in the city are concerned that the window given for bursting fireworks will confuse the common people and might dampen the sale ahead of Deepavali season.
Sheikh Abdullah, president, Chennai Metropolitan City Firecrackers Sellers Association said, “Now, there is an uncertainty in the sale of fireworks due to 2 hour window. It will confuse the public and this year's sale also might get affected.”
