28.4 per cent in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh drink, says survey

About 26.5 per cent men and 1.9 per cent women drink liquor in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Hyderabad: About 26.5 per cent men and 1.9 per cent women drink liquor in Andhra Pradesh and TS, where 32 per cent men and four per cent women smoke, according to a survey conducted by the Indian Council for Medical Research. Dr Vijay Anand Reddy, director at Apollo Cancer Institute explained, “Oral cavity cancer is the third most common cancer which accounts for 30 per cent of all cancers in the country. Almost 1 lakh cases are diagnosed annually. The relative mean age of occurrence is around 55 years in the adult population.”

The incidence of liver cancer ranges from 0.7 to 7.5 per 1 lakh population per year in men and 0.2 to 2.2 per 1 lakh population in women per year. Data shows that the mortality rate for men is 6.8 per 1 lakh and 5.1 per 1 lakh in women. The incidence of liver cirrhosis is 1.6 per 1 lakh population per year.
