Chennai: India now stands second only to China as the country of origin for most foreign students in the US and India is outpacing China’s growth in this area, said Philip Min, Consul General of US in Chennai.

“The number of Indian students studying in the US rose by a 30 per cent bringing the total to 1,33,000 Indian students,” he said. “EducationUSA has been helping Indian students decide about universities, giving tips on writing exams for those universities, and preparing to do well in Visa interviews. Last year, 1,20,000 parents and students approached 71 centres of EducationUSA for applying to US universities.”

He allayed fears about incidents in which students were sent back upon arrival to US. “We promote legitimate travel to US. A visa ensures you have entry permit to the airport but Homeland Security in US has to provide access to other parts of the country.”

When Poorani’s daughter was in grade 11, she had made up her mind to do her undergraduate studies from the US. There was a lot to be done, including listing out universities, preparing for exams, writing SOPs, going through visa application norms, to name a few.

Poorani said: “We were not sure how to go about it all at once. We got help from EducationUSA centre She managed to secure admission at University of Texas, Austin, and now she is working at Microsoft.” “The centre in Chennai helps students from Chennai, Puducherry and Kerala.

Those who enrol as members, use the services to get help applying to colleges, know how to approach the exams like SAT, ACT, etc, writing SOPs, webinars, online counselling through our Facebook page, one on one counselling sessions,” said Maya Sundararajan, senior adviser at EducationUSA, Chennai.
