Nine people have been arrested by the Indiranagar police in connection with the Karachi bakery incident where a group of men had barged into the shop on Friday evening and forced the staff to cover the name ‘Karachi’.
The accused have been identified as Praveen, Babaji, Sreeyappa, Srihari, Shivakumar, Naveen, Lakshman, Gunashekar and Sanjay, all aged between 30 and 35 years. All of them are friends and are residents of Ulsoor. On Friday evening, a group of eight to 10 men barged into Karachi bakery located on 100 ft road in Indiranagar and demanded that they change the name of the bakery. They allegedly questioned the staff about the name ‘Karachi’ and wondered if the owner belonged to Pakistan. Soon, the local police rushed to the spot and dispersed the crowd.
However, the manager agreed to put up a Tricolour inside and covered the name ‘Karachi’ with a banner. Police said that they did not resort to violence or damage property and everything in the bakery was intact. The police examined the CCTV footage and arrested nine of them on Saturday. The police are questioning them to know if others were involved.
However, the Karachi Bakery’s official Facebook page on Saturday clarified that founder Mr. Khanchand Ramnani had migrated to India during Partition and the brand was established in 1953. It is an Indian company based out of Hyderabad, Telangana. The post further said that the essence of Karachi Bakery is absolutely Indian and will remain so.
