Kerala State Literacy Mission launches Aksharashree

The classes will begin on March 15 for 8,500 people enrolled for higher secondary equivalency exams.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority has launched Aksharashree, a project targeting 100 per cent literacy for the state capital, in association with the city corporation.

Devaswom minister Kadakampally Surendran Inaugurated its pravesanolsavam on Sunday giving its textbook to 70-year-old Abusa Beevi. The classes will begin on March 15 for 8,500 people enrolled for higher secondary equivalency exams.

Classes will be for elementary, Class IV, Class VII, Class X and higher secondary equivalency courses.

Apart from 2,500 illiterate people enrolled for the elementary course, 2,000 people registered for Class IV, 1,500 for Class VII, 1,500 for Class X and 1,000 for higher secondary classes.

The duration of the course is as follows: literacy-three month, Class IV-six months,  Class VII -eight months, Class X- ten months and or higher secondary classes - one year. There will be 25 students for the elementary course, 20 for Class IV and 15 in Class VII in each ward. Classes for Class X and higher secondary will be conducted at government schools.A survey found 11,764 illiterates in the city limits.
