AIADMK failed to fulfil promises of peace: MK Stalin
He said the total amount of debts which was Rs 2.52 lakh crores during the last financial year had gone up to Rs 3.14 lakh crore.
CHENNAI: Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin on Friday said the government had failed to fulfil its promised objective of providing peace, prosperity and development to the people, but only increased the debt burden and fiscal deficit. Speaking in the discussion on the budget in the Assembly, he said the total amount of debts which was Rs 2.52 lakh crores during the last financial year had gone up to Rs 3.14 lakh crore, while the fiscal deficit had seen a sharp rise of Rs. 40,533 crores. He said the government had come out with several promises in the Governor's address in 2016 including formation of Cauvery Management Board, Cauvery Water Regulation Committee, retrieval of Katchatheevu, increase of Mullaiperiyar dam water storage level to 152 feet and protection of fishing rights of Tamil Nadu fishermen in Palk strait. But, none of the promises had been fulfilled, Stalin charged.
The government had also promised to set up desalination projects, formulate granite and minerals policy, he said and said such promises had not been fulfilled. The allocation for the Chief Minister's portfolio of PWD and Highways alone had been increased by Rs. 8846 crores, while the allocations for other ministries are not sufficient, he charged. Stalin also charged that the state had failed to get the required funds from the centre for drought and cyclone relief. The state government had asked Rs. 62,138 crores, but the centre had sanctioned a paltry amount of Rs. 2,014 crores, he said. The government turned the peaceful protest for jallikattu into violence and there is no peace anywhere in the state. The state government had not found solutions to any of the issues, he added.
