Only 4 per cent prosecution in cases against kids, says DH Waghela
Justice Waghela revealed that over 5,000 cases of violation of human rights registered since 2009 are pending with KSHRC.
Mysuru: Karnataka State Human Rights Commission Chairperson Justice (retd) D.H. Waghela said that in India successful prosecution in cases related to women and children was mere 3-4 per cent. Citing 2016 national figures, he said successful prosecution in all cases was just 30-40 per cent.
He stated this at the valedictory event of a two-day workshop on “Joint commitment for safer cities free of violence against women and children”, hosted for 60 public prosecutors and assistant public prosecutors of Mysuru, Kodagu, Chamarajnagar and Hassan at Karnataka Police Academy premises.
It was hosted by Hanns Seidal Foundation and Karnataka Police Academy as part of an agreement between the state government and Germany’s Bavaria government. It aims to hold capacity building workshops with stake holders of the criminal justice system to build sensitive approaches towards protection of women and children.
He said the electorate should carefully elect their representatives as this would help bring down crime.
Karnataka Police Academy Director Vipul Kumar spoke of creating favourable system for victims. He cited the example of South Africa’s Thuthuzela care centre, which has all stake holders of justice under one roof and ensures reception of victim, treatment, police plaint, recording statement, production before magistrate and counselling within 24 hours.
