Madurai bench of Madras HC lifts ban on TikToK
The Apex Court had said the interim order (ban on TikTok) would stand vacated if the HC fails to decide on the issue on Wednesday.
Madurai: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday lifted its ban, ordered earlier this month, on the download and use of the popular mobile app for video-sharing, TikTok.
The case was taken up by the Bench of Justices N Kirubakaran and S S Sundar following the Supreme Court order of Tuesday directing the High Court to decide on grant of interim relief to TikTok. The Apex Court had said the interim order (ban on TikTok) would stand vacated if the HC fails to decide on the issue on Wednesday.
The HC Bench at Madurai accordingly lifted the ban on TikTok after hearing the submissions from Senior Advocate Isaac Mohanlal appearing for the Chinese company and also the amicus curie, Senior Advocate Arvind Datar. The TikTok counsel Mohanlal told the court there was adequate precautions and technology in place to ensure that nude/ obscene content does not get uploaded through the app. Besides, TikTok also made written submissions on the steps taken to address the apprehensions raised by the court following its April 3 ban.
While lifting the ban on TikTok, the Madurai Bench warned that if any controversial video violating its conditions is found uploaded using the app, that would be considered as contempt of court.
