Hyderabad: The Nampally court remanded YSRTP chief Y.S. Sharmila to 14-day judicial custody for allegedly assaulting police personnel, misbehaving with them and preventing them from performing their duty, on Monday. Sharmila’s counsel moved a bail petition which the court posted to Tuesday.

Sharmila’s mother Y.S. Vijayalakshmi, who came out in support of Sharmila, allegedly slapped a woman cop. No case was filed against her. The videos of the duo pushing and assaulting police personnel went viral on social media.

The issue started when the police tried to prevent Sharmila from heading to the TSPSC office to protest against the question paper peak. When the police objected, stating she had no permission, she manhandled the cops and directed her driver to drive over them.

Her driver moved the vehicle and one of the wheels ran over the leg a constable, Giribabu.

Sharmila was when detained and shifted to the police station where her husband Anil Kumar visited her. She was booked, taken for a medical check-up and produced before a court for judicial remand. Vijayalakhmi tried to meet Sharmila at the police station but was sent back home.

The Hyderabad city Police Officers Association condemned the assault on the cops and termed them as cheap attempts for publicity.
