Andhra Pradesh cops bring traffic lessons to doorstep

GUNTUR: The police department targets parents and conducts counseling at doorsteps. The Guntur police in an innovative measure are visiting the houses of young traffic norms violators and conducting counseling to the parents. The policemen are imposing fines and penalties and conducting counseling to youngsters about the importance of following traffic norms and further safe living. They are offering chocolates to traffic rules followers and offering roses to violators adopting Gandhigiri.

As many 17,650 cases of helmet rule violation, 6,100 cases of triple riding, 658 cases of seatbelt norm violation, 3,225 cases of driving without license, 794 cases of cell phone driving and 1,262 cases of over speed driving registered in the past five months in Guntur city hence the police are targeting youth and their parents for safe journeys on the roads.

Guntur urban traffic DSP K. Srinivasulu said that a drive was launched from May 21 to restrain minors and youngsters from violation of traffic norms. He said that the police would go to house of the violators, will serve the notice, collect the fine and would conduct counseling to parents about the consequences of minor and rash driving. Further the policemen are explaining about the importance of helmet and seat belt to the family members. He said that this awareness drive would be conducted in all police station till May 31.

Parents G. Suguna Rao and others said that sometimes their children taking their bikes whenever they go to other areas keeping bikes in the homes. They said that special drive, serving notices at door steps and counseling to parents is a good initiative as this would awaken them about the wrongdoings of their children.

Guntur urban SP Sarvasreshth Tripathi said that majority deaths occurring during accidents due to head injuries as a result of not wearing of helmets and seat belts. He lamented that besides rash driving, over speed driving and snake/zigzag driving causing severe accidents killing the riders and the public. He sought the public mainly parents not to encourage speed driving which kills the youngsters and further to avoid minor driving.
