Imported dates are the other delicacies being served to believers breaking fast.
THIRUVANANTHAPRUAM: Apple, grapes, water melon and oranges have made way for mangoes and guavas at the Iftars hosted by various mosques in city. Imported dates are the other delicacies being served to believers breaking fast. “Even before the Nipah scare we were have been particular about washing and cleaning the fruits served to believers. This practice is continuing,” said Palayam Juma Masjid president A.R. Khan.
There is no denying the fact that Nipah virus has caused panic and confusion among the people and the situation is no different among believers especially those observing fast. Health inspectors of the corporation are in touch with the committees. They are communicating the steps being taken by the government to contain the infection.
Mr Khan shared the process carried out before the food reached the plates of believers. “We procure good quality fruits mainly from Chala market. These are thoroughly washed and cleaned. Fresh lemon juice, imported dates and fresh fruits are provided to the dehydrated fast-breakers and also the others such as the migrant labourers, school children, working women, and so on. Dates are mostly imported from countries such as Saudi or brought to the mosques by other nationals,” he added.
“Mangoes and guavas were not the preferred fruits among most believers even before Nipah episode. This we are serving mainly apple, grape, oranges and watermelon,” said a member. Mohammed Shareef, Counsellor of Manacaud Mosque said they were sticking to the guidelines issued by corporation and food safety department. “We have asked our members to be vigilant against false messages on social media,” he said.
