Eve teasers beware, Obavva Pade on prowl in Bengaluru
The special team, introduced by the West Division police, began patrolling on Wednesday.
Bengaluru: ‘Obavva Pade’ has arrived in the city to combat the increasing crimes against women. This special team comprises women police personnel, who will keep a watch on the crimes against women in public places.
The special team, introduced by the West Division police, began patrolling on Wednesday. They will be clad in a black t-shirt, camouflage army pants and a cap, instead of the conventional uniform.
A senior police officer told Deccan Chronicle, “The idea was from Ravi D. Channannavar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) West division. The team comprises policewomen drawn from various police stations in the West Division.”
“The team has around 12 members currently, all of them trained to handle situations where women are being targetted. For now they will patrol areas like Majestic bus stand, City railway station, Upparpete and the like. These areas are notorious for eve-teasing, molestation attempts and other crimes against women. It has a major bus stand, railways station and shopping centres, which sees a high female footfall,” he added.
They will, for the moment, focus their efforts in the West Division and then implement them elsewhere. “Any woman who is being targetted or harrassed can visit any station in the West Division and the special team will look into the case. They will be accompanied by a couple of policement. The team will not only protect women but also men who are being victimised in any way. The presence of the team on the streets is enough to frighten various anti social elements,” the officer explained.
