Ultra-modern C&D waste recycling plant comes up in city

Hyderabad: Minister K.T. Rama Rao on Friday inaugurated a construction and demolition (C&D) waste recycling plant at Fathullaguda. People can dial the toll free number 1800-1200-72659 for collection of C&D waste. Citizens have to pay Rs 342 per metric tonne of C&D waste for collection and scientific disposal.

Alternatively, citizens can get their waste disposed of by using their own transportation measures at the Fathullaguda unit by paying Rs 85.50 per MT.

Speaking on the occasion, Rao said that it was because of intensified efforts of the GHMC that the collection of waste had doubled from 3,500 metric tonnes to 7,000 metric tonnes per day. The number of garbage transfer stations have been increased from 70 to 100. He said that the government would soon introduce modernised vehicles to carry garbage from the city to the Jawaharnagar dump yard.

Rao said that about 13.35 lakh metric tonnes of C&D waste has been collected from April 2018 with 7.97 lakh metric tonnes (MT) collected at Jeedimetla facility. The Fathullaguda unit, which was running on a trial basis, collected 5.38 lakh MT.

The minister said that they were generating wealth out of waste. Pointing out that a 20 MW waste-to-energy plant has been established, he said that a 28 MW plant will come up soon. With regard to the Strategic Nala Development Programme, Rao said works worth Rs 450 crore were under progress out of the total Rs 858 crore allocated for the same.

Musi Riverfront Development Corporation chairman D. Sudheer Reddy said that the corporation will meet with builders’ associations and other stakeholders to make sure that C&D waste is not thrown in the open and is transported to the Fathullaguda plant.

The GHMC is planning to establish two more C&D processing facilities. Recycled products will be utilised for non-structural purposes such as footpaths, road sub-base, parking tiles, kerb stones and precast compound walls.
