Mangaluru: Man posed as WHO doc to cheat women, arrested with driver

Saukat, who is facing charges under IPC Sections 420, 406 and 419 in Jammu and Kashmir, is on the run.

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru city police arrested two people who cheated many from different parts of the country. Of the two, one is from Jammu and Kashmir and the police are investigating whether he has any connection with outsiders or antinational elements.

On a tipoff, the Mangaluru West police stopped a car that had a sticker of ‘Government of India’ and a board saying ‘World Health Organisation Director’.

During the interrogation, the driver declared his name as Baljindar Singh from Punjab and the other man in the car as Dr Basit Shah of Andheri, East Mumbai. The police found an ID card, claiming Basit as "Dr Basit Shah, MBBS/MS/MCH, World Health Organisation."

The police also recovered other documents from the car. Basit admitted that he had studied only till PUC and had faked documents claiming to be a doctor working for WHO. He also revealed his real name as Saukat Ahmad Lone, hailing from Vakura district Jammu and Kashmir. But the police found that Saukat hails from Ganjipora village in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. Baljindar told the police that he took Saukat to different parts of the country and was paid Rs 20,000 per month. 

Saukat, who is facing charges under IPC Sections 420, 406 and 419 in Jammu and Kashmir, is on the run. He was travelling to different parts of the country cheating people. He registered his name as Dr Basit in matrimonial ads and cheated women promising to marry them.

He was in Mangaluru to meet a woman, whom he had contacted through one such matrimonial ad.
