Puducherry: Former member of Parliament  M. Ramadass sought the immediate intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to appoint a new Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry Central University. In a memorandum addressed to the PM, Mr Ramadass pointed out that the post of Vice-Chancellor has been vacant for the past two years.

“The post was advertised after one year on August 21, 2016 and the Search Committee met after 7 months and recommended a panel of five candidates to the Ministry on March 29 for onward transmission to the President of India, who is the visitor of the university, for final selection of the Vice-Chancellor.

“Even after a lapse of about six months the Government of India has not selected a VC from the panel.”, said Mr Ramdass in the letter. In the absence of a regular VC, a top ranking University has now been downgraded and there is a policy paralysis in the university and no development activity worth the name is undertaken. In his letter, Mr Ramadas also pointed out that almost all statutory positions of the university and many faculty positions remain vacant.

“Since there was no commanding leader, different groups in the university were moving in directions of their own choice.

The Executive Council, the supreme body of the university, reverses its own decisions within hours to suit the convenience of individuals and sometimes directed to take wrong decisions, thereby losing its sanctity”, he added.

“Please do not allow any consideration of caste or creed or religion or region or sex to weigh your selection. The only considerations should be competence, calibre and merit”, The letter said.
