Hyderabad: Women, senior citizens allege ill-treatment

Hyderabad: Women and senior citizens who were carrying out a peaceful campaign to save the Kapra lake during immersion were ill-treated by an ex-corporator, Kotha Rama Rao and two others in the last days of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, alleged C.S. Chandrashekar, secretary of the Federation of North Eastern Colonies of Secunderabad (FNECS).
The ex-corporator asked the women to get out of the lake premises in filthy language, he said.
Senior citizens lament that even the police officials at the venue asked them to move away from the lake under pressure from the ex-corporator.
From the first day of Ganesh Chaturthi, a group of people have been campaigning at the Kapra lake and encouraging residents to use clay or haldi Ganesha and do in-house visarjan, as the lake is full of garbage.
Narrating what happened, Mrs Gulshan Bamboat, a senior citizen of Sainikpuri, stated, “The police who praised our campaigning all through the week, after the ex-corporator’s instructions, asked us to leave the lake premises.
“As we are firm in our motive, we haven’t moved from there. Then three others asked us to stop saying that the lake was filthy and not to use banners as we were hurting ‘public sentiment,” Mrs Bamboat said.
