IISc to President Ram Nath Kovind: Small is beautiful
This memento was presented to President Ram Nath Kovind during his visit to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) on Tuesday.
Bengaluru: A unique casket, made of stone with ancient paintings enveloping a palm-sized silicon wafer with his image etched in a gold film about 1000 times thinner than a strand of human hair, crafted with the help of state-of-the-art nano technology: This memento was presented to President Ram Nath Kovind during his visit to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) on Tuesday.
The President, who spent about 20 minutes at the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE), IISc, saw for himself the use of nano technology in sectors as varied as health, space, atomic energy and defence, and a variety of sensors designed and made at the National Nano Fabrication facility. In addition, he was briefed about mentoring of 4000-odd research scholars from 700 universities across the country in cutting edge research by the faculty.
"Some of the gadgets developed here will hit the market in about six months, and the outcome of our efforts in mentoring research scholars in nano technology as part of the outreach programme will be visible in a couple of years. It was indeed a great honour for us to have the President visiting our facility. He was a keen observer, and heard about our advances in nano science and engineering," Prof Navakanta Bhat, Chairman of CeNSE, told Deccan Chronicle.
