Hyderabad: Dump near Indira Park to be shifted

Hyderabad: The protests of morning walkers at Indira Park have finally borne fruit as the dumping yard at the park which was the reason for as many as nine major and minor fire accidents in the last couple of years is going to be removed within a week’s time. 

The assurance was given by the Zonal Commissioner, Mr Raghu Prasad, in the presence of Musheerabad sitting MLA Dr K. Laxman. The decision has come following the dharna by the Indira Park Morning Walkers Association earlier this week.

The park accommodates thousands of people on a daily basis and is one of the largest lung spaces in the city with a variety of flora. But, because of the past fires, there has been a loss of age-old trees. Mr Narender Reddy, General Secretary of Morning Walkers Association, mentioned, “There was a huge loss to the environment as the 40 to 50-year-old coconut and banyan trees were burnt because of the fire from the dump yard.”

Though smokers also contributed to the fire by throwing cigarette butts carelessly, morning walkers mentioned that the corporation used to burn the existing garbage in order to make space for dumping garbage again. This used to rise high in the sky as the dump mainly comprised of dried leaves, twigs old tyres and mattress.

“The park is wonderful. But authorities were spoiling it by dumping garbage. We have been protesting against this as the essence of a public park would be lost. We have been assured that the dumping would stop, but we have to see,” Dr Sudharkar Yadav, a regular at the park.
