Chennai police commissioner review cleanliness drive at marina beach

The city police commissioner and the corporation commissioner took stock of the work being done from Anna Square to lighthouse.

Speaking to mediapersons, AK Vishwanathan said that the initiative was undertaken following the Chief Minister's orders to clean up the city's iconic landmark.

Chennai: City police commissioner AK Vishwanathan and corporation commissioner D. Karthikeyan on Saturday reviewed the cleanliness drive which the Chennai Corporation has been undertaking for the last week.

Speaking to mediapersons, AK Vishwanathan said that the initiative was undertaken following the Chief Minister's orders to clean up the city's iconic landmark. “All shopowners are  cooperating and so the work is efficient,” the commissioner said, adding that CCTV cameras will be installed in important areas soon. A watchtower will also be erected to help keep the area safe, he said.

Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan said that the drive has been welcomed by the public who appreciate the effort. He also promised to take proper action on the beach becoming a garbage dump yard.

The 2,200 shops which dotted the 2.8 km stretch between Anna Square and the lighthouse along the beach. The shops were asked to fall into two rows, 8 feet apart and have been placed 25-feet away from the walkway. 

The process of shifting the street shops began on November 17, and nearly 70 shops will be completely shifted by November 20. 

The decision for streamlining the street vendors was taken after a meeting with the street vending committee, following the Chief Minister's orders.
