Chennai: Senior cops inspect Ice House station

Chennai: Two days after the Ice House police station was allegedly set on fire unruly crowd that clashed with the police on Monday senior police officials inspected the station to assess damages. The team had also inspected MKB Nagar police station, which was damaged during the violence.  

The inspecting team consisting of R Sudhakar, deputy commissioner of police, Ambattur and DC S. Radhika , visited the stations. A woman a grade I constable attached to the Ice House police station who was present when the station was set on fire said that the incident happened around 10.30 am, and explained the sequence of event to the DC.

She said that she came out of the station hearing a huge thud and saw huge gathering of men throwing glass bottles, tube lights and coconut shells at the policemen deployed  Later  all the vehicles parked in front of the station were on fire. She andd other women constables  ran into the station and locked themselves in.

The women cops had used wireless to alert higher up as the mob continued pelting stones and breaking glass as the fire was spreading. It took 10 minutes additional police force to reach the spot and rescue the women police personnel.

The women police personnel had to come out of the station breaking a  glass window in the inspector's room.

After conducting inspection DC  Sudhakar, while talking to the reporters said that “It was a risky task and even if the rescue operation had delayed in five minutes, it would have turned fatal”.
