Kozhikode: Citizens of Vadakara gave a touching farewell to its district educational officer (DEO) E.K. Suresh Kumar who was moving out to Kasargod being promoted as deputy director of education (DDE).

Mr Kumar’s four-year stint was memorable for the educational district with a slew of programmes beneficial for students as well as teachers.

His vision was reflected in the form of ‘Save’, for an environment-centric education system. As many as 650 schools were part of the programme which made students know about their environment and grasp its importance.

“Now, the government has come up with the project ‘Haritha Keralam’,  This is the same intended through ‘Save’, four years back,” says Vadayakkandy Narayanan, a teacher at Shantiniketan HS, Thiruvallur. ‘Act’ was a programme to encourage artistically talented teachers and around 400 members were part of it.

Mr Kumar came up with ‘Kaithangu’ to lend a helping hand to students from deprived backgrounds. Cooperative banks joined hands with the project and set aside RS 5,000 for their educational needs.

‘Guide’ was another programme launched with the support of IGNOU. It gave a one-year certificate course to teachers in guidance and counselling, and the DEO was instrumental in ensuring that at least one teacher from a school completed the course.

‘Read’ was the initiative to train students who do not know to read and write, though they reached higher classes. During his tenure, Vadakara topped among educational districts in SSLC result in the state in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

Mullappally Ramachandran MP inaugurated the farewell meeting held on Monday. Municipal chairman K. Sreedharan presided.
