Chennai: 100 partymen arrested for stir near Kanchi Math

CHENNAI: More than 100 functionaries belonging VCK and Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam were arrested for staging protest before Kanchi Kamakoti Math at Kanchipuram, on Thursday.

Condemning the action of sitting through Tamil Thaai Vaazthu at a book release event on Tuesday, members of VCK staged a protest condemning Kanchi Vijayendra Saraswati, the younger seer of Kanchi Kamakoti Math.

During the agitation that took place before the Math, the protestors raised slogans against the junior seer and his action of ‘insulting’ Tamil language.

However, the police presented at the Math arres-ted the protesters, only to witness another group belongs to Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam staging protest.

Police arrested them too. Moreover, nearly 100 functionaries from both parties had been arrested, said the police.

Meanwhile, Kanchipuram police increased the police security to the math. “As many as 50 police personnel are deployed at the math,” a police officer said.
