Chennai: Report sought on traffic cop excesses
The traffic police engage private individuals to collect Rs 20 as mamool from auto drivers every day, the report said.
Chennai: The State Human Rights Commission has directed additional commissioner of police (traffic) to file a detailed report in connection with allegations of the traffic police assaulting auto rickshaw drivers for not giving bribe.
Justice D. Jayachandran initiated suo motu proceedings on the basis of a newspaper report and directed the senior police official to file the report in four weeks.
According to the newspaper report, traffic police were collecting bribes from drivers of auto rickshaws and share autos in Solignanallur, Madambakkam, Agaram and Tambaram. The traffic police engage private individuals to collect ' 20 as mamool from auto drivers every day, the report said. Also, it said, they harass drivers who refuse to pay the amount.
The drivers had sought suitable action against the traffic police.
